A mighty sonic dynamo, this fifteen-member ensemble operates in those fertile creative spaces where contemporary jazz and classical composition and improvisation practices overlap, sparking fresh explorations of texture, compositional form, and improvisational interactions. All of this is in evidence on this recording of music by the Orchestra’s co-leader and much-acclaimed composer, Richard Nelson, who is also the masterful guitarist in the ensemble.

Strong debut album as a leader/composer/saxophonist. Smith leads 21 musicians through jazz styles from edgy to calming. Bandcamp New & Notable Dec 18, 2015
Composer Asuka Kikitani was inspired by the vibrant nature of Minnesota to construct this gorgeous calendar cycle of percussive works. Bandcamp New & Notable May 30, 2023
Truly ambitious in its production and its expansion of 9 Horses’ core trio lineup, Omegah mixes jazzy exuberance with dark tinges via a potpourri of acoustic and electronic instrumentation. Yet the music is no mere hodgepodge, and its unexpected turns remain thematically consistent and compelling throughout. Add violinist Sara Caswell’s agile, inspired and passionate soloing, and the result is one of 2021’s very best contemporary jazz releases. Dave Lynch
